The Race pick features a sharp beak for grappling with rock along with more aggressive teeth both on the underside and topside of the pick. It also features a small hammer that adds the perfect amount of head weight for thin and brittle ice. The Ice pick brings the tip 6 mm closer to the handle for performance similar to the popular X-All Mountain tool. They are designed to provide solid sticks with minimal penetration making them the perfect choice for brittle ice and technical mixed terrain. ![]() All three picks feature the refined beak and tooth configuration CASSIN tools are known for. Climbers can further refine the X-Dream with micro-adjustable trigger finger ledges (choose from two inserts – the X-Finger Small or the X-Finger Large – that can be flipped over to adjust the position) and the X-Rest insert which adjusts the overall height of the handle. The Ice position drops the handle for a more natural swing. ![]() In the Dry position, the handle kicks upward for a more down and out pull. A quick turn of the allen bolt above the grip allows the tool to be switched between Dry and Ice positions by changing the angle of the handle in relation to the angle of the pick. This amazing ice axe not only features three different T rated picks for various terrain, but it also incorporates a patented adjustment system in the ergonomic handle to fine tune the swing and torque even further. I'll confirm that the Ice picks are indeed stamped "T".The X-Dream combines two tools in one – a fully optimized tool for technical ice and an aggressive dry tooling machine. "At just 4 cm from the tip, the cross-section of the Race pick widens from 3 mm to 4 mm." The Race picks are tapered even less, though I haven't held one myself: You can see it if you look at both picks side by side. ![]() So the Mixte pick tapers to full thickness gradually over 10cm, and the Ice pick tapers more quickly over just 8 cm. "the pick gradually widens from 3 to 4 mm, 8 cm back from the tip of the pick." "The Mixte pick weighs 120 grams, with the thickness gradually increasing from 3 to 4 mm, 10 cm from the tip." I have no idea why, even though it mentions making the Ice pick swing more like an All Mountain. "Compared with the Mixte and Race picks, the tip of the ice pick is also situated 6 You can read about the picks on page 5 of this PDF from CAMP: The Ice picks are actually very slightly thicker and more downturned than the Mixte picks. I expected them to be a bit thinner, B rated, and less aggressive. I bought the replacement Ice picks, but I sent them back. BTW - it's absolutely nothing to do with the bolt coming loose - it's in the handle/shaft toothed interface.ĭivnamite wrote: Source? The photo posted by Bill shows the Mixte pick. There's no feeling like being 20' above your last screw on Pic O' The Vic and feeling your axe handle wobbling. I first noticed it on lead earlier this week in Ouray. I've only got maybe 8-10 days on them and they were brand new for this season. The handle has come loose and audibly shakes on every swing. In other news though, I think I have to warranty one of my X-Dreams. As said above, it's easy to justify when Cassin picks cost 40% less than Petzl/BD picks. I've got 2 sets of Aermet picks and I'm definitely holding on to them (and I don't even own any BD tools right now).Īnd yes, I definitely find myself wanting to sharpen my X-Dreams a bit more than I ever wanted to sharpen BD picks. We’ve already seen it happen, so it’s time to get see it for yourself. The only manufacturer that ever made Aermet picks in any quantity was BD and only for a short period in the late 90s. The new design of the SuperSport picks for Cassin X-Dream is an absolutely new geometry that has optimised for International World Cup Ice climbing competition, and will elevate your on your projects to the next level. Chris, the original Cascade picks were definitely NOT made of Aermet or any other exotic steel.
